# Soft Declines Are Not Failed Orders: Fix the Retry Message

Your checkout just told a customer with money in the bank that her card failed. The issuer code was a soft decline, the kind that often clears on a second attempt or a different authentication step, and the generic error sent her to a competitor instead of to a retry button.

That distinction is not trivia. Issuers split declines into hard declines, where the account is closed or the card is reported stolen, and soft declines, where the refusal is temporary: insufficient funds at that moment, a do not honor with no detail, a request for stronger authentication. Treating both with the same red banner wastes the second group, which is the recoverable one.

## What the checkout should say instead

A useful decline message does three jobs in one screen. It says the payment did not go through, it avoids blaming the customer, and it names the next action that has a chance: try again, try a different card, or complete the bank challenge that appeared and vanished. Vague wording fails all three. Baymard Institute checkout research has flagged unclear error presentation as a recurring reason shoppers abandon instead of correcting a problem they could have fixed.

Keep the cart intact and say so. A shopper who believes her items, discount code, and shipping choice survived the failed attempt will retry. A shopper who thinks she is starting over will not. ## Separate the two decline families in your analytics

Log soft and hard declines as different events, split by device and by payment method. Blended together they look like one checkout problem. Split apart, patterns show up fast: a wallet method with a soft decline spike usually points at authentication handling, while a card spike after a gateway change points at the integration, not at your customers.

Shopify Help Center documentation on checkout and payment settings is the starting point for checking which retry and authentication options your plan and gateway actually expose. Do not design a recovery flow around a feature your gateway does not send data for.

## The retry window is short

Send one recovery email, and send it within the hour while the shopper still remembers the order. One message with a direct return link to the saved cart outperforms a three message sequence that starts tomorrow. After that window, the honest move is to release any reserved inventory on the normal schedule rather than holding stock hostage to a payment that is not coming.

Test the flow yourself with a real card that you know will soft decline, on a phone, on the connection speed your customers actually have. If the challenge step reloads the checkout and drops the shipping selection, you found the bug your analytics were rounding off. ## Frequently asked questions

### Why did my card get declined when I have money in the account?

A soft decline can happen even with funds available. Issuers refuse temporarily for authentication, velocity, or risk reasons and often approve a later attempt. A hard decline is different: the account itself will not pay, and retrying the same card rarely helps.

### Should a store retry a declined payment automatically?

Only where the payment method and customer agreement allow it, and only a limited number of times. Blind automatic retries can trigger more issuer refusals and extra fees. A prompted retry, where the shopper acts, is the safer default for most stores.

### What should a decline message never say?

It should never guess at a reason the store does not know, and never use wording that blames the shopper. State that the payment did not complete, keep the cart visible, and give one clear next step.

### How do I know if declines are a checkout problem?

Split decline reporting by soft and hard codes, payment method, and device. A sudden change after a theme, app, or gateway change is a store problem until proven otherwise. A flat, low rate spread evenly is normal background noise.
